What is a Virus or Malware?

A virus or Malware is a program or a piece of code that is installed onto your computer and runs against your wishes. Some viruses or malware can replicate themselves, allowing the threat to further infect your system, others are also capable of transmitting themselves across networks to infect other devices. You can get infected with multiple threats, each can be designed to do a different job, some will destroy data, others will damage system folders, stopping your operating system from working correctly.

The vast majority of viruses or malware that infect a computer will come from being connected to the internet or email however, it is possible to infect your computer by using an infected USB storage device such as a pen drive or external hard drive. Virus and malware removal can be harder depending on the type of virus you have.

Virus Removal

Our Virus Removal Process

Typical virus removal involves the following process:

Manual check

Check windows settings and files to make sure they are original and have not been modified by the virus. Check startup items to make sure no bogus and infected programs are loading when the system is booted up. Check for any obvious malware such as annoying pops ups and toolbars.

In-depth scanning

This involves the use of multiple scanners to check for infections. Different scanners are good at detecting different types of viruses and malware and more serious rootkits.

Tune Up

Once the viruses have been removed and the system is clean, we then try to make it more difficult for the computer to be reinfected. This involves making sure all the common applications are up to date and that the existing security software is effective.

Full updates

We will make sure that all common applications that are known to cause security issues are updated with the latest versions.

All drivers updated

This ensures a smooth running of the computer – out of date or corrupt drivers can cause many problems.

In extreme cases, we may need to reinstall Windows if the operating system has become too infected to safely repair.

However, we try to avoid this unless requested and we certainly do not use this method as a routine way of virus removal. We aim to complete all virus removal work within two working days. However, in some more difficult cases such as older, slower computers it may take longer.

Forget viruses – Today’s malware comes in all shapes and sizes

BY COMBINING THE WORDS ‘MALICIOUS’ (MEANING ‘HARMFUL’) AND ‘SOFTWARE’ WE GET THE WORD ‘MALWARE’. VIRUSES ARE JUST ONE TYPE OF MALWARE. OTHER TYPES INCLUDE SPYWARE, WORMS AND TROJANS.

RANSOMWARe

Threat of the year since 2012. Attackers enter your PC through unpatched software and encrypt all your files. Can you afford to pay a $600 ransom to get your data back?

TROJAN HORSE

A trojan horse (or just a trojan) pretends it will be a useful and safe program when actually it will try to attack your device.
Trojans are named after the story of the Trojan Horse. It is said that many years ago the Greek army wheeled a large wooden horse to the gates of the city of Troy. The people of Troy thought it was a gift and wheeled it inside. They didn’t know that inside the horse were Greek soldiers waiting to attack. Can you see why a trojan horse on a device is named after this story?

SPYWARE

Spyware is software that installs itself onto devices and then steals personal information about the user, like passwords, email addresses and other important information. It often does it just by keeping a record of everything the user types, which is called key logging. Some spyware can even use your webcam without your knowledge.

WORMS
Worms can spread from device to device, but unlike a virus they don’t need to attach themselves to other programs. Worms can copy themselves hundreds of times, so they can very quickly harm your device and other devices. A worm might copy itself onto your email account and then send a copy to all of your email contacts!
BOTS/BACKDOORS
They turn your PC into a remote-controlled zombie. Your computing power is collectively sold on the black market to send spams, attack others or store illegal content.
PUPS
Potentially Unwanted Programs that mess up your computer with useless browser toolbars, tons of commercials and other bulk that slows down the PC.
ADWARE
Adware is usually loaded onto your PC when you download or install a free program. Many free programs are provided free because they rely on the built-in advertising to generate sales. Adware will not usually affect the performance of your computer, nor will it result in any data loss…but it can be extremely annoying to be inundated with advertising and pop-ups!

FAQ

Questions we often hear about Virus Removal

I thought viruses were pretty harmless!

In the early days of the Internet, they generally were not as big a deal as they are now. Malware these days can be very nasty, stealing your data, locking you out of your computer and even holding your hard drive content to ransom. It’s important to take them seriously.

Are Macs immune to viruses?

They are less vulnerable to malware than a Windows PC but they are not immune. Macs can experience a variety of malware infections and Mac owners are certainly not safe from their effects.

What anti-malware software do you recommend?

Webroot and Malwarebytes are two great options. We provide technical support for both software packages if required.
